The Versatile Benefits of Upholstered Pads

Upholstered pads offer an unmatched versatility to the interior design and millwork industries. These custom cushioned panels can add comfort, texture, and design to any surface. A wooden bench becomes a cushy lounge space. A blank wall becomes a plush feature wall. They essentially create instant furniture, providing an inviting seat or cushioning where traditional furniture may not be the best fit.

Not only is this cushioning more versatile, it is also more economical. Upholstered pads keep pricey fabric costs down by efficiently wrapping just the seat and back pads. Manufacturing costs are also significantly less than building a full-sized upholstered piece of furniture. It is a win-win for all parties of the project! The client is getting truly custom seating at a better cost, the contractor doesn’t have to fuss with commissioning an entire piece of custom upholstered furniture, and the upholstery shop can easily manufacture the upholstered pad with great efficiency. Here at Corn Upholstery, we have applied our 70+ years of upholstered furniture manufacturing experience to this hot market to deliver the best quality seating for any project, large or small.

Another benefit of using upholstered pads is its ease of specifying for the project. The dimensions on an upholstered pad are simple, with typically only needing to specify its length, width, and thickness. The dimensions can be slightly limited in a few ways. Length and widths are usually limited to the size of the solid substrate used in the pad. Most plywood and MDF board products max out at 8 feet long by 4 feet wide, limiting the total size of each upholstered pad. We also recommend that you use at least 2 inches of high-resiliency foam thickness to ensure basic comfort while limiting the thickness to no more than 5-6 inches to avoid the fabric “puddling” and wrinkling.

Styling choices for upholstered pads presents many great options. Those options begin with fabrics of course, but how those fabrics are applied and styled can really set your upholstered pads apart as beautiful furniture appointments. Below are a few common options for wrapping and styling your upholstered pads.

The applications for upholstered pads are nearly endless. They work great as padding for built-in niches, millwork benches, or upholstered walls. Being able to add a plush touch to any surface means you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for design. Upholstered pads seamlessly allow for both to coexist. It’s this versatility that has driven the prevalence of upholstered pad projects through our shop over recent years.
